Interstitial solid solutions occur when the solute atoms occupy the interstices between the solvent atoms. They form the basis of some very important alloy systems, not least Fe-C.

This diagram shows a 2-D representation of such an alloy. The Interstitials module looks in detail at how interstitial atoms are arranged in 3-D cubic structures.
