The scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is a hybrid microscope which uses the scanning of a very small diameter electron beam to form a transmission image of a thin specimen. Its mode of operation is similar to the SEM, while its images are interpreted in similar ways to TEM images.
Notice that the electron beam travels upwards in this microscope. This is traditional for a dedicated STEM.
