Most TEM specimens are about 100nm thick. There have been on average perhaps 10,000 active TEMs in the world over the last forty years. Estimate the volume of material which has ever been examined by TEM.

The TEM uses high energy electrons to enable us to look through very thin samples at magnifications ranging from a few hundred times to a million times.
